DESIGN CHALLENGE

How can I provide young creatives with a source for inspiration and empowerment while promoting inclusivity and authenticity?

The Opportunity

For gen z, passion is the future of work

According to Business Insider, more than 41 percent of Gen Zs plan to become entrepreneurs. In another survey, over half 22-year olds agreed that their generation is more creative than previous generations. Without doubt, Gen Zs sees creativity as a core attribute in successful interaction, self-realization, and a fulfilling career.

The Solution
A magazine for you by you

Ego Magazine is a platform that uplifts the community who values independency and believes that being the boss of themselves and their future is empowering.

User Goals
  1. Create a source of inspiration that encourages self-growth
  2. Provide young audiences with a sense of mentorship and community
  3. Develop a platform for creative expression and appreciation
PHASE 01
Initial Research
In beginning this project, the first step was to partake in concept brainstorming, competitive research, and creative and editorial strategizing. This further defined the project’s objectives, vision, and goals.

PHASE 02
Conceptual Design
The second phase consists of sketching several low fidelity logo thumbnails and spreads which were further refined in the digitalization process. Consistent feedback from group critiques helped me gain insight into what components were working and what needed redrafting.

PHASE 03
Final Design
The final deliverables for this project were three editorial spreads with a front and back cover.
REFLECTION
Concluding Thoughts
Love your audience
Throughout this project, I learned how to make more purposeful design decisions catered to my audience’s needs–whether it was using creative typography to reflect the brand’s casual playful tone of voice that appeals users or using clever compositions to make information more digestible and accessible for readers. In this editorial project, I learned a lot about communication design and visual messaging–how to use design to reach a community and deliver impact.
